I've been using a language learning app for a while.

I've taken (or am taking) a high school language class.

I know some basic vocabulary and have a few simple expressions memorized.

I struggle with spontaneous and meaningful conversation, but am okay in contexts I've practiced phrases and vocabulary (especially when the person I'm talking to is patient with me). 

I've covered the novice level basics.

I've spent some time abroad and immersed in the target culture.

I'm pretty good, if not very good, at contexts that are familiar to me and that I've had a lot of practice with. 

I  can survive a spontaneous and meaningful conversation, but I stumble over sentence structure when I try to form a more complex thought.

I'm comfortable in conversation. 

In spontaneous conversations, I rock on topics that are familiar to me, but sometimes I run out of vocabulary or struggle to construct a complex thought. 

I've had multiple occasions throughout my life to practice, but I feel my improvement has plateaued.

I can manage to communicate complex thoughts and make myself understood even if the topic is unfamiliar to me, but...
